Dirty Leucistic

Dirty leucistic axolotls are leucistic Ambystoma mexicanum with extra dark speckling, freckles, or smudged pigment on a pale body. They usually retain dark eyes, which helps separate leucistic animals from albinos, and the amount of speckling can increase or become more visible with age. The word dirty is a hobby color description, not a sign that the animal is unhealthy or poorly kept.

A dirty leucistic belongs in the same cool, cycled aquarium setup as any axolotl, with dechlorinated water, hides, gentle flow, and safe foods such as appropriate worms. Dark speckles need to be read in context, since normal pigment can be mistaken for injury, fungus, ammonia burn, or debris if the keeper ignores texture and behavior. In breeding records, dirty leucistics may be tracked apart from clean white leucistics, but health, body structure, gill quality, and responsible pairings matter far more than freckle count.
