Copper

Copper axolotls are Ambystoma mexicanum morphs with reduced dark pigment that gives the body a warm tan, caramel, beige, or copper-brown look. Freckling is common, and the eyes may appear lighter than those of wild-type axolotls. The copper trait is generally treated as a heritable morph in the hobby, but its expression can vary by line and by what other color traits are present in the animal.

Copper axolotls need the same cool, low-stress aquarium conditions as other axolotls. Their lighter coloration can make small skin marks, fungus, or water-quality irritation easier to see, which is helpful only if keepers respond quickly. Stable temperatures, clean water, hides, and careful feeding are more important than trying to intensify color. Breeders should identify copper animals from reliable parentage when possible, because pale wild-type, dirty leucistic, and other muted morphs can sometimes be mislabeled from photos alone.

Colors: Albino, Axanthic, Chimera, Copper, Dirty Leucistic, Gfp, Golden Albino, Leucistic, Melanoid, Mosaic, Piebald, Silver Dalmatian, White Albino, Wild Type
