Axanthic

Axanthic axolotls are Ambystoma mexicanum morphs with reduced yellow pigment, producing a cooler gray, black, white, or silvery appearance compared with golden or wild-type animals. The exact look can vary: some axanthics are dark and charcoal-toned, while others appear pale with muted markings. The morph is valued by hobbyists because it changes the balance of pigment rather than simply removing all color, and it can interact visually with other traits in breeding projects.

Care for an axanthic axolotl is the same species care required for any morph. The aquarium should stay cool, clean, and stable, with soft hides, safe substrate choices, and gentle filtration that does not batter the gills. Color should not be used as the main health measure; appetite, gill condition, body weight, skin integrity, and behavior are better guides. Breeders should label axanthic lines carefully, since gray or pale juveniles can be confused with other morphs before they mature.
