Royal Western Gelbvieh Div. Of Real World Genetics

Royal Western Gelbvieh Div. of Real World Genetics is a family-owned purebred Gelbvieh cattle operation run by Rodney, Tanya, Wacey, Keston, and Chayse Hollman, situated about 15 km east of Innisfail in Red Deer County, Alberta — roughly an hour south of Edmonton and an hour north of Calgary.

The program is built around genetics that can perform in real commercial conditions, not just on the show floor. Calving is scheduled for May and June so the cow herd grazes through winter rather than being managed in a sheltered, pampered environment, and any cow that fails to raise a good calf under those conditions is culled. Bulls are performance tested and fertility checked as yearlings before being developed and sold as coming two-year-olds, giving buyers animals proven for early maturity.

Selection emphasis falls on moderate, thick females with sound structure, correct feet and legs, and superior udder quality — traits designed to work equally well for purebred and commercial producers. The show ring is used as a tool to evaluate and source elite Gelbvieh genetics from across North America rather than as an end in itself. The operation has also expanded its breeding program to incorporate Simmental and Angus genetics under the Real World Genetics umbrella, and its genetics have reached producers in countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, and Paraguay.
