Prairie Hills Gelbvieh

Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, run by the Sickler family in Gladstone, North Dakota, has been raising purebred Gelbvieh cattle since 1985, when Galen and Marcia Sickler made their first herd purchases at the Black Hills Stock Show. The operation sits on the edge of the North Dakota Badlands, southwest of Bismarck, and the land itself traces back to a homestead established in 1948.

Today the ranch is led by Klint and Maralee Sickler, making it a third-generation seedstock program. The focus from the start has been on cattle that combine performance with structural soundness, selecting for easy-fleshing, thick animals that hold up under the dry range conditions of western North Dakota. Cow selection is rigorous: females are culled for disposition, udder quality, structural soundness, and productivity, with no margin for underperformance.

In addition to purebred Gelbvieh cattle for sale in North Dakota and across the northern Plains, the program produces Balancer cattle — registered hybrids blending Gelbvieh with Angus or Red Angus genetics — along with Red Angus bulls. Outcross genetics have been a consistent priority, and the herd's reach extends to commercial producers and seedstock operations throughout the Midwest, Canada, and Australia. Semen and embryos from key sires and donor females in the program are also available for producers looking to access these genetics remotely.
