Hager Cattle Company raises registered and commercial Limousin cattle near Karlsruhe, in the McHenry County farm country of north-central North Dakota, roughly an hour and a half northwest of Minot. Austin Hager runs the operation alongside his wife Leah as the fourth generation of their family to work this land, with roots in the Limousin breed tracing back to 1992.

The program carries a herd of roughly 900 head and holds an annual public bull sale that has run for more than 18 consecutive years, making it one of the longer-standing Limousin cattle operations in North Dakota. Breeding decisions center on three priorities: moderate birth weights, overall growth performance, and EPDs that support a high-quality carcass grade. The registered herd is managed under the same conditions as the commercial herd, with no preferential treatment, so that bulls are proven against the realities of the northern plains before they leave the ranch.

North Dakota's hard winters shape the selection process directly. The operation selects for doability, longevity, and fleshing ability, with a focus on building cattle tough enough to thrive through cold, resource-limited seasons.
