Five Oaks Farm

Five Oaks Farm has been raising Santa Gertrudis cattle in Shelbyville, Tennessee since 1993, when Jim and Tammy Graves established the operation in Bedford County, roughly 50 miles southeast of Nashville.

The farm's herd includes both purebred Santa Gertrudis and what they call 5-Star cattle — crosses with Hereford, Angus, and Red Angus — developed in response to regional demand for Santa Gertrudis cattle for sale in Tennessee. The program is listed in the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association seedstock directory, and the farm holds membership in Santa Gertrudis Breeders International, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, and the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association.

The farm's story has a few chapters. After pausing operations to support their children's activities, Jim and Tammy restarted by rebuilding their herd through a mentor in the local Santa Gertrudis community, eventually settling the operation at its current Shelbyville location in January 2017. Husbandry practices include rotational grazing, no-till pasture management, low-stress animal handling in line with Beef Quality Assurance standards, and a feeding program built around grass, roughage, and mineral supplementation.
