Davidson Gelbvieh

Davidson Gelbvieh, operated by Vernon and Eileen Davidson near Ponteix in southwest Saskatchewan, has been raising purebred gelbvieh cattle since 1985. Ponteix sits roughly an hour southwest of Swift Current, placing the operation in the heart of the province's ranching country.

Vernon grew up on a grain and commercial cattle operation in the Cadillac, Saskatchewan area, where he learned breeding, selection, feeding, and AI work from his father. He and Eileen built their own place from the ground up after marrying and have devoted their entire livelihood to a 200-head purebred herd, having sold their commercial cattle years ago to focus exclusively on registered gelbvieh.

Over the decades, the program has refined its cattle toward the polled gene, with DNA testing conducted on bulls before sales to identify those carrying the homozygous polled trait. Semen testing is also performed on yearling bulls ahead of their annual sale. Bulls and females from Davidson Gelbvieh have sold into multiple Canadian provinces, several U.S. states, and international markets. The operation co-hosts a long-running annual bull sale on the ranch alongside neighbouring Lonesome Dove Ranch, run by their son Ross and his family.

Eileen Davidson has represented the Manitoba/Saskatchewan Gelbvieh Association on the beef committee at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, where the family has been showing cattle since nearly the event's inception. In 2025, Eileen and Vernon were named Purebred Gelbvieh Breeder of the Year by the Man/Sask Gelbvieh Association, a recognition of their four decades of contribution to gelbvieh cattle in Canada.
