Cross Creek Red Devons
Cross Creek Red Devons raises south Devon cattle in Branson West, Missouri, in the heart of the Ozarks about an hour south of Springfield. The operation is run by Garland Pierce, who returned to farming after growing up in an agricultural community and made a deliberate choice to work with a breed that set the herd apart from conventional cattle operations in the region.
Pierce operates farm locations in Bradleyville and Fordland, with the bull battery at one site and the cowherd grazing at another. The herd has grown to more than 200 registered, purebred south Devon cattle, making Cross Creek one of the larger south Devon cattle breeders in Missouri and among the more substantial registered herds nationally. The operation focuses on grass-fed, grass-finished beef production, and Pierce has noted that the rolling Ozarks terrain is well suited to that approach.
Selection standards at Cross Creek are precise: only animals displaying the deep ruby-red coat color and proper breed markings are retained for registration. The program also favors polled genetics, with homozygous polled bulls incorporated to eliminate horns from the cowherd. Pasture management includes ongoing work to improve forage mix and infrastructure, such as fenced water sources designed to reduce parasite exposure.
