Crains Run Ranch
Crains Run Ranch raises Buckeye chickens in Miamisburg, Ohio, about 40 miles north of Cincinnati in the southwestern corner of the state. The operation is family owned and run by Jeffrey Lay, who began breeding Buckeyes in 2002.
Over more than two decades, Lay developed what is now recognized within the breed community as the "Lay" strain, assembled from several established lines including Brown, Rhodes, Pierce, and Pearce stock. The selection process drew on line breeding, trap nesting, and the Walter Hogan method to produce birds noted for strong egg production relative to other Buckeye strains. The ranch also preserves and maintains those original contributing lines alongside its own.
Crains Run Ranch holds NPIP certification and keeps its flock in compliance with federal and state poultry regulations. Jeffrey Lay co-founded the American Buckeye Club and has contributed to the broader effort to document and preserve this heritage breed. Those looking for Buckeye chickens in Ohio will find that the ranch's program is rooted in traceable lineage and long-term selective breeding rather than hatchery-sourced stock.
