Chimney Butte Ranch

Chimney Butte Ranch raises registered Gelbvieh cattle near Mandan, North Dakota, about 10 miles west of Bismarck in the heart of the Missouri River country. Doug and Carol Hille established the herd in 1991, starting with registered heifers sourced from established Gelbvieh operations in North Dakota and building what began as a modest grazing project into a full-scale purebred program.

The ranch itself carries deep roots in the region. Originally homesteaded by Axle Johnson in 1912, the property takes its name from a nearby butte and ridge whose sandstone peaks resemble chimney tops. The Hilles purchased the ranch in 1989 and steadily grew the operation, eventually surpassing 250 cows and expanding into leased dryland and irrigated cropland to support their cattle program. No-till farming practices were adopted shortly after 2000 as part of that expansion.

The program has focused on registered, predominantly polled, and homozygous black genetics, with females pregnancy-checked via ultrasound and marketed with genomic-enhanced EPDs. Chimney Butte Ranch is a member of the North Dakota Gelbvieh Association and has maintained an active presence in the American Gelbvieh Association's production sale network.
