Syrian Hamster Cage Setup: Size, Bedding, and What Goes Inside

A Syrian hamster needs one continuous, unbroken floor area of at least 100 by 50 cm (about 39 by 20 inches, or 5,000 square centimetres), a base deep enough to hold 25 cm (10 inches) of bedding it can dig real tunnels in, a solid surface wheel about 30 cm (12 inches) across, and no other hamster in it, ever. That setup is larger, deeper, and emptier of cage mates than almost anything sold with a picture of a hamster on the box.
Every one of those numbers is published by a named organisation, and the organisations do not fully agree with each other. The rest of this page is where each figure comes from, how far apart the sources actually are, what to do when they disagree, and what goes inside once the enclosure itself is right.
If the hamster is already home, two things are worth writing down on day one: the inside dimensions of the enclosure, and a weekly weight. Both are what adding a record on a Creatures profile is for. A weight trend is usually the earliest warning you get with an animal the RSPCA describes as having a high metabolic rate, able to lose condition quickly, and unlikely to show outward signs of pain.

How big does a Syrian hamster cage need to be?
The most useful thing to know before comparing figures is that the guidance genuinely varies, and one of the organisations publishing a number says so itself. PDSA writes that “there isn’t a lot of evidence to say exactly how big a hamster cage should be”, then gives one anyway: the Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare, based in Germany, “states a minimum cage size of 100x50cm. Note that this is a MINIMUM size but bigger is always better!”
That is 5,000 square centimetres, about 775 square inches or 5.4 square feet of continuous floor. It is the figure most UK welfare guidance now uses, and it is the number to buy against.
Above it sits the research. In a 2007 experiment published in the journal Animal Welfare, Fischer, Gebhardt-Henrich and Steiger housed sixty female golden hamsters individually in four cage sizes: 1,800, 2,500, 5,000 and 10,000 square centimetres, with litter depth, enrichment and a 30 cm running wheel standardised across all of them. Stereotypic wire gnawing appeared in every cage size, but hamsters in the small cages gnawed significantly longer and more often, and the authors concluded that welfare was enhanced at a minimum ground floor area of 10,000 square centimetres. That is roughly one square metre, or 10.8 square feet. Worth noting where the smallest cage in that experiment sits: 1,800 square centimetres is 60 by 30 cm, which is the footprint of an ordinary starter cage.
Below it sits the law, and the law is much lower. Annex III of the EU directive on animals used for scientific purposes sets the minimum enclosure for hamsters at 800 square centimetres with a minimum height of 14 cm, and a floor area per animal of 150 to 250 square centimetres depending on body weight. That is a legal floor for a laboratory. Quoting it as a pet standard would misrepresent it. It is here because it explains why “there is a standard” and “the standard is good” are different claims.
Three more positions complete the picture. The RSPCA publishes no floor area for pet hamsters at all, describing instead a home cage that allows a thick layer of bedding, is safe and secure, has a solid floor and a raised lid. And the Merck Veterinary Manual opens its housing advice with the opposite emphasis: “Because of their small size, hamsters do not require large amounts of space compared to some other kinds of pets.” Merck gives no floor area either, only a height: “The enclosure should be at least 6 inches (15 cm) high, but enclosures 8 inches (20 cm) or more offer the advantage of deeper bedding.” Read that as the height of the whole enclosure rather than the room left above the bedding, because that is what it measures: 25 cm of bedding on its own is deeper than Merck’s 15 cm minimum, and the 30 cm wheel still has to stand in whatever is left. Merck’s height is therefore not the figure to shop against for the setup on this page. And Humane World for Animals, the US organisation formerly operating as the Humane Society of the United States, does publish a figure, and it is the lowest of the pet numbers: a “Minimum 20-gallon tank or wire cage per hamster”, which is roughly 2,300 square centimetres, about half the German minimum.
So the answer to how big a hamster cage should be is a range, and it is a wide one: the 20 gallon tank US welfare copy still quotes, the 5,000 square centimetres UK guidance settles on, and the 10,000 square centimetres the peer-reviewed behaviour work points at. What the sources share is a direction. Buy against 5,000 square centimetres as a floor, aim at 10,000, and round up.
Two notes on measuring. Floor space is the ground level footprint inside the walls, so multiply inside length by inside width and ignore every shelf and platform above it. Extra levels do not add to that number, and PDSA is explicit about why: “Single-level, larger cages tend to be better than multi-level, tall cages, as hamsters have poor eyesight and can easily fall from heights.” And you can check any enclosure in ten seconds. Inside length times inside width in centimetres gives you the number to compare against 5,000. In inches, compare against 775.
Why the cage on the shelf is usually too small
PDSA states the retail problem plainly: “In the wild, hamsters make burrows, climb and walk for miles each day. Most hamster cages sold in shops aren’t big enough to meet a hamster’s most basic needs.” Its recommendation is to go around the category entirely and use “a much larger space, such as an extra-large cage, glass tank, or homemade enclosure”. Measure the floor before you believe the label, because a cage can be sold and pictured for hamsters at a third of the minimum above.
The choice between a barred cage and a tank is a real disagreement between good sources, and it is worth understanding rather than settling by preference. The RSPCA prefers airflow: “A cage with stainless steel bars or mesh sides is preferable to one with solid sides, and it should have a raised lid.” Merck prefers materials a hamster cannot destroy: “Smooth plastic or glass is preferred for cage walls because hamsters can chew wire,” adding that whatever is chosen “should be easy to clean and sanitize, well ventilated, and easy to light”. PDSA accepts an extra-large cage, a glass tank or a homemade enclosure without ranking them.
In practice the bedding usually decides it. A barred cage holds bedding only up to the top of its plastic tray, and most trays are a few centimetres deep, so 25 cm of substrate simply falls out between the bars. A tank or a deep based enclosure holds it. If you do use a barred cage, the base has to be deep enough for the bedding depth in the next section, the floor under the bedding must be solid, and the lid has to be secure: the RSPCA notes hamsters “can escape easily from poorly constructed cages”, Merck calls them “outstanding escape artists”, and PDSA simply says “hamsters are fantastic escape artists!”
Bar spacing is the one number none of these organisations publishes, so treat any specific figure you see quoted with suspicion. The workable test is that the gap must be too narrow for the animal to push its head through, and that a hamster which sits at the bars chewing is telling you something about the enclosure rather than about itself: PDSA lists “rubbing against cage bars” among the causes of fur loss it sees, and bar chewing is the same stereotypic behaviour Fischer’s team measured against cage size.
Modular habitats built from small plastic pods joined by tubes fail on the measurement rather than on any single dramatic hazard. Their floor area is divided into compartments, and floor space only counts when it is continuous, so a habitat that looks large on a shelf can offer less unbroken ground than a shoebox. Ventilation through narrow tubes is poor, the thin plastic is chewable (Merck notes hamsters chew wire and wood, and pod habitats are neither the glass nor the smooth plastic walls Merck prefers), and none of the compartments is deep enough to bury a burrow in.
Bedding is the part most setups get wrong
Let the bedding depth choose the enclosure. This is the parameter where the sources are furthest apart and where the gap between typical and good is widest.
The pet keeping floor comes from PDSA: “Hamsters need a deep layer of bedding (no less than 25cm/10 inches) so they can burrow like they would in the wild. They use their burrows for sleeping, hiding and storing food so it’s also important to use a material that holds its structure.” Merck’s clinical chapter goes considerably further: “In captivity, deep bedding that is appropriate for burrowing is recommended. Cages with at least 40 to 80 cm (approximately 15 to 30 inches) of bedding enhance the welfare of Syrian hamsters.” The RSPCA gives no number and asks for litter “deep enough to allow them to burrow”.

The reason for the depth is behavioural, and it has been measured. Hauzenberger, Gebhardt-Henrich and Steiger housed forty five male golden hamsters singly on wood shavings 10, 40 or 80 cm deep. The animals on 10 cm showed significantly more wire gnawing and higher running wheel activity than the others. The animals given 40 cm or more dug tunnels, and in the deeper groups the shelter was used only occasionally, which is the evidence keepers cite for bedding mattering more than hides. Depth is not decoration. It is the difference between an animal performing a stereotypy at the wall and an animal doing what it is built to do.
That behaviour has a wild counterpart. In the field study that mapped wild burrows, Gattermann and colleagues recorded thirty near Aleppo in northern Syria and investigated the structure of twenty three of them. Depths ran from 36 to 106 cm, averaging 65 cm, with a vertical entrance shaft leading to a nesting chamber and at least one food chamber. Merck’s own text calls wild Syrian burrows “shallow”, which reads oddly next to those measurements, and the resolution is that shallow is relative to other burrowing mammals. Merck’s captive recommendation of 40 to 80 cm sits squarely inside the measured range, which is the number that matters.
For a first setup, 25 cm across the whole footprint is the target to hit and hold. Going deeper is better, and a deep enclosure lets you add depth later without buying anything else. Enclosure height follows from that depth rather than from any published figure: the wheel stands on its base on top of the bedding, so measure the wheel and base you actually buy, add the 25 cm, add a few centimetres of running clearance under the lid, and shop for an enclosure at least that tall. The bedding and the 30 cm wheel alone stack to 55 cm before the base and the clearance are counted. Sinking the wheel into the bedding to make a shorter tank work is not a solution, because the lower rim has to turn clear of the substrate.
What to put in it. Every source above converges on paper based bedding as the safe default, and PDSA also lists aspen, spruce or hemp (dust free hardwood, though it warns these “aren’t good at supporting burrows, so you’ll need to mix in some paper-based bedding for extra stability”), thin unscented toilet paper, soft hay for structure, and organic soil free of fertiliser and chemicals. The RSPCA accepts dust free wood shavings or granulated corn cob as a good compromise, notes coarse sand is natural but difficult to handle, and notes peat is suitable but discolours the coat. For nesting material it names good quality hay, wood wool, shredded paper or cardboard. Merck recommends shredded paper (not newspaper printed with conventional inks) and commercial paper based bedding.
What must never be in it. PDSA and Merck and the RSPCA all rule out fluffy bedding, and their reasoning is worth reading once. PDSA: “Cotton wool, kapok, bamboo fluff and other ‘fluffy’ beddings … can get wrapped around their legs and cause life-threatening gut blockages if eaten.” The RSPCA warns that the thin strands “can be difficult to break, potentially leading to a hamster becoming tangled up in their bedding and/or the loss of circulation in tangled limbs resulting in amputation or, unfortunately, euthanasia.” Merck calls cotton balls potentially dangerous because the cotton can catch in toenails and feet and cause injury. Also out: cedar chips and fresh pine, which Merck avoids for possible toxicity and respiratory irritation; sawdust and dusty shavings, which PDSA lists as a breathing hazard; scented bedding; and shredded newspaper, whose ink PDSA calls toxic.
Where the sources disagree, which they do about wood shavings, follow the strictest guidance that is easy to obey. Paper based bedding at 25 cm or deeper, with some hay mixed through for structure, satisfies all of them.
One Syrian hamster per enclosure, for life
This is the least negotiable line on the page, and it is the one most often broken by a well meaning purchase of two.
The RSPCA: “Syrian and Chinese hamsters aren’t naturally sociable and should always live on their own.” PDSA: Syrian and Chinese hamsters “live alone in the wild, only encountering others for mating or territorial defence. If they meet, they will fight, leading to injury or possibly even death.” Merck’s pet owner guidance: “Hamsters are normally housed singly except during breeding periods,” and “Hamsters should not be housed in groups because adults can become aggressive toward each other even if they are reared together.” Humane World for Animals, the organisation formerly operating as the Humane Society of the United States, says the same: Syrian hamsters are territorial and must live alone.
Merck’s clinical chapter adds the sex specific detail that surprises people: “Female Syrian hamsters are heavier than males and generally are aggressive toward other hamsters. Nonestrous females can behave especially aggressively toward young males, sometimes killing them.” Both sexes can be aggressive toward each other.
Three practical consequences. A pair that is currently “getting along” is a pair that has not fought yet, and the RSPCA is clear that hamsters do not play fight, so any sign of a fight is real. Separation after a fight is permanent, and the RSPCA does not recommend reintroducing hamsters that were separated for fighting. And two Syrians means two complete setups, and a divider down the middle of one enclosure does not count, because the RSPCA advises against housing unfamiliar hamsters even in adjacent cages, since the pheromone signalling between them is itself stressful.
Some dwarf species can sometimes live in pairs or trios if grouped young, which is where the confusion starts, and Merck’s laboratory chapter adds to it by allowing early age group housing for hamsters in general: “If group housing is desired, individuals should be housed together from an early age to decrease aggression.” That line is written for laboratory colonies and for hamsters as a group, while Merck’s own owner page tells pet keepers to house hamsters singly. Dwarfs are a different animal with a different rule, and the RSPCA adds that even dwarf hamsters do not need company to be happy. If the animal in front of you is a Syrian, whether it is a black, a cream, a cinnamon or a long haired one, it lives alone. Colour and coat make no difference to the housing rule.
The wheel, and everything else that goes in
A wheel is not optional enrichment for a Syrian hamster, and the size of it is a welfare decision rather than a preference. The RSPCA notes that wild hamsters “can run up to five miles a day”, and PDSA says the enclosure should suit an animal that in the wild would “climb and walk for miles each day”.
PDSA gives both the number and the reason: “A lot of hamster wheels are too small, forcing the hamster to run with a curve in their back which can cause long-term pain. It also needs to have a solid surface to run on, not slats or bars that your hamster’s legs could get caught in.” Its minimums are 20 cm (8 inches) for dwarf hamsters and at least 30 cm (12 inches) for Syrians. Merck agrees on the surface and the fit: “Be sure to select a wheel with a solid running surface to protect feet and bones. The wheel should also be large enough for your hamster to move freely inside and to easily enter and exit.” The RSPCA’s version is a useful shortcut when you are looking at a shelf: wheels “must be good quality with a large diameter, such as one intended for rats”. The 2007 cage size experiment used 30 cm wheels throughout, which is another way of saying that a 30 cm wheel is what researchers consider unremarkable.
The test at home is the animal’s outline. A hamster on a correctly sized wheel runs with a level back and its head up. If the spine curves upward, the wheel is too small, whatever the packaging said.

The rest of the furniture is short and mostly cheap.
Hides and a nest box. Nest boxes need to be hidden, per PDSA, which names small cardboard boxes, ceramic pots and multi chambered wooden hides, and makes a nice point about how to fill them: put the nesting material outside the box “so your hamster can fill the nest box themselves”. The RSPCA asks for a nest box large enough to set up a larder, sleep and move around in, dark inside, placed near food and nesting material but away from the water bottle so a leak cannot flood it, and ideally with no floor so you can check the animal by lifting it.
Chews. Gnawing material does dental work: teeth that overgrow eventually stop an animal eating, and the RSPCA advises checking the front teeth regularly and asking a vet to confirm they are growing properly. Untreated softwood branches, shelves and gnawing blocks all work, and PDSA names them explicitly. A solid branch to chew is a different exposure from a bed of aromatic shavings the animal breathes all night, which is why softwood is fine here while fresh pine shavings stay out of the bedding.
A sand bath. The RSPCA’s grooming guidance is that hamsters “don’t typically require grooming beyond their own self-grooming and occasional access to a sand bath”, with weekly brushing added for long haired varieties. A shallow heavy dish of coarse sand, sifted out when it is soiled.
Water. Merck specifies a bottle with a sipping tip, and its clinical chapter adds a Syrian specific warning: “Glass water tubes are contraindicated for Syrian hamsters because they readily bite through glass. Stainless steel sipper tubes close to the floor are recommended.” With deep bedding, close to the floor means reachable from the bedding surface, so check the height again after every full clean. A blocked or airlocked sipper is invisible until the animal is already dehydrated, which is why many keepers run two.
Food. Merck asks for a heavy dish that resists tipping, with sides low enough for easy access but high enough to keep droppings out, and names ceramic as a good choice. Its clinical chapter notes that Syrians often cannot eat from hoppers because of their broad muzzles, so food goes at floor level. Scattering food and burying some of it in the bedding, rather than always using a bowl, is a PDSA suggestion that turns feeding into foraging for an animal that hoards by instinct. Where the enclosure goes
Placement is cheap to get right and expensive to get wrong, because a hamster cannot leave a hot enclosure.
The target band from PDSA is a steady 18 to 21 C (64 to 70 F), away from draughts and direct sunlight, and it names both failure modes: too hot and “they won’t be able to escape and could develop heatstroke”, too cold and “they might slip into a dangerous survival state, similar to hibernation but called ‘torpor'”. Merck’s acceptable band is wider at 17 C to 26 C, which converts to about 63 F to 79 F; Merck’s own page prints the Fahrenheit end as 64 F to 79 F, a one degree rounding difference at the cold end, and its clinical chapter notes hamsters often hibernate below 5 C (41 F). Treat PDSA’s narrower band as the target and Merck’s as the outer edge.
Noise and light matter more than most people expect. Somewhere “quiet, calm, and away from anything noisy such as the TV or washing machine” is what PDSA asks for, because noise and vibration are stressful. The RSPCA goes further and asks that hamsters be housed away from household objects that generate ultrasound, listing televisions, computer screens, vacuum cleaners and sources of running water, since hamsters hear high frequencies we cannot and find them stressful. It also asks for predictable light, with the room going dark at roughly the same time each night, and notes hamsters are sensitive to bright sunlight.
That rules out conservatories, sunny windowsills, garages, and the top of a chest of drawers next to a television. A quiet spare room, a hallway, or a low table in a corner of a room that empties in the evening all work. Low is worth a thought of its own: a hamster tank full of bedding is heavy, and an enclosure at knee height is one you will actually open.
Other pets are part of placement too. The RSPCA asks owners with a dog or cat to make sure the hamster is safe from them, so the enclosure needs to be somewhere those animals cannot reach it, and the lid needs to be secure rather than merely present.
Cleaning without wrecking the burrow
The instinct to strip a hamster enclosure weekly comes from small cages, and it stops making sense once the setup is large and deep. Both organisations say so directly.
PDSA: spot clean daily, removing wet or soiled bedding, uneaten food, and cleaning bowls and bottles, then “small cages typically need a full clean once a week, while larger set-ups may only need it every few weeks”. The RSPCA: “In most cases a deep clean once or twice a month should be sufficient,” with spot cleaning every few days. A large enclosure with 25 cm of bedding and a defined toilet corner is genuinely cleaner for longer than a small cage, so the reward for buying the right box is less work rather than more.
Three details make a full clean less disruptive. Clean in the evening, when the animal is awake and active. Put back a handful of old dry unsoiled bedding, because the RSPCA says a hamster’s sense of smell is very important and asks that some unsoiled bedding and nesting material be transferred across at every clean. And put everything back where it was, because hamsters are creatures of habit and PDSA wants the nest, toys and bowls in their original positions.
Anything that looks like illness is a job for a veterinarian who sees exotic pets. That includes diarrhoea or a wet tail, wounds, sudden swellings, fur loss, and any change in behaviour or appetite. Weekly weights, the date of the last full clean, and the vet visits themselves belong on the animal’s profile rather than in your memory, and reminders for upcoming care can carry the recurring parts.
