Golden/Standard
The golden, or standard, Syrian hamster is the classic form of Mesocricetus auratus and the color most closely associated with the wild-type golden hamster of northern Syria and southern Turkey. It has a golden-brown agouti coat, darker ticking or shading, a pale underside, and dark cheek markings, though show and pet lines may be described as light golden, dark golden, or golden dominant spot. In many communities, standard also implies the normal short coat rather than a long-haired teddy bear coat. This variety is the foundation from which many later pet colors and patterns were developed.
Golden Syrians are often used as a reference point for judging body type, coat quality, and true color in the hamster fancy. As pets they remain solitary animals: adults should be housed one to a cage with deep bedding, a large solid wheel, chewable furnishings, and places to hide food. They do well with calm, regular handling but should not be kept in pairs. Breeders selecting golden lines pay attention to temperament, size, fertility, and clear agouti markings, not just color intensity. Buyers should look for bright eyes, clean fur, steady movement, and a calm response rather than assuming the common color means lower quality.
