European

European silkworm strains are domesticated Bombyx mori lines developed after Asian mulberry silkworms became established in Mediterranean and other European sericulture regions. Older sericulture texts often describe European races as temperate, commonly univoltine, and capable of producing relatively large white or yellow-white cocoons, although individual lines vary. They are not wild European insects; like all domestic silkworms, the larvae depend on human care and the adult moths are poor fliers.

Today these strains are kept mainly by breeding programs, heritage sericulture projects, museums, schools, and small cocoon producers. Their value may be in large cocoon size, spring-rearing adaptation, or use as parents in crosses with Chinese or Japanese lines. Successful rearing is less about elaborate equipment than clean conditions, dependable mulberry, and matching eggs to the correct season. Anyone buying eggs should ask whether the stock is pure or hybrid and whether it requires diapause treatment before hatching.

Colors: White, Yellow-White
