Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a catchall description for a domestic rat whose variety or ancestry has not been identified. It may be a rescue rat, a pet shop rat, a former feeder rat, or an individual from an accidental litter. In fancy rats, the word breed is often less precise than in many livestock or dog registries, because visible categories are usually coat type, ear set, markings, color, or tail form. An unknown-breed rat may still be an ordinary, healthy Rattus norvegicus domestica with recognizable traits such as hooded markings, albino coloring, black skin, or a smooth standard coat.
Care decisions should be based on the rat in front of you. Check sex, age estimate, breathing, skin, teeth, weight, and temperament before introducing the rat to companions. Quarantine is useful when the source is uncertain, and breeding should generally be avoided without known health and family history. Unknown background does not prevent a rat from becoming a good companion, but it does make careful observation and honest record-keeping more important for rescues, adopters, and veterinarians.
