Rat Cage Setup: Size, Height, Bar Spacing, and What Goes Inside

A rat cage setup needs four things the pet aisle rarely sells together: enough floor for at least two rats, real height above their heads, solid floors and levels instead of wire, and bars close enough that a rat cannot push its head through. Published guidance clusters around 400 to 1,000 square centimetres (roughly 60 to 155 square inches) of floor per rat and a minimum clear height of 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inches), which is why the cages welfare charities specify are tall boxes rather than long ones.
The rest of this page is that setup in order: how big, how tall, how narrow the bars, what the floors and levels are made of, what goes on the floor of them, how many rats live inside, and where the whole thing stands in your house. One warning before the numbers. Rat housing guidance is less standardised than it is for guinea pigs or rabbits, and the published figures disagree by a wide margin. Everything below is attributed, and where the disagreement is real it is described rather than averaged away.

How big does a rat cage need to be?
There is no single published minimum for pet rats, and pretending otherwise is the easiest way to get this wrong. What exists is a spread of figures from bodies with different jobs, and the spread itself is informative.
The New South Wales animals in schools standard gives the clearest per animal figure: “A minimum floor space of 400cm2 should be provided per animal for animals under 450g” and “A minimum floor space of 800 cm2 should be provided per animal for animals above 450g”. The same standard sets a minimum cage height of 25 cm and a preferred temperature of 18 to 22 C.
The UK figures are given as whole cages, which is more useful when you are shopping. The National Fancy Rat Society says that because adult bucks weigh around 500 g and does around 300 g, “a large cage is essential (at least 2′ x1′ x 1′ for a pair)”. That is 61 by 30 by 30 cm, or about 929 cm2 of floor per rat. Woodgreen is more generous: “The minimum size cage for up to four rats is: 80cm wide, 50cm deep, 80cm high. For up to 10 rats, the size should be: 123cm by 63cm by 93cm.” Those work out at 1,000 cm2 of floor per rat and 775 cm2 respectively.
So three independent sources converge on roughly 775 to 1,000 cm2 per rat once you do the arithmetic, with the Australian schools figure sitting lower. The RSPCA gives no number at all and instead asks that the cage “be as large as possible, with lots of space so that your rats can perform all natural behaviours”, and the PDSA says the same in different words: “Rats need as much living space as you can give them, and additional space for exercise.”
One set of numbers should not be used as a target. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s list of “minimal space allocations” comes from laboratory caging standards, and its metric and imperial figures do not agree with each other on the page, so it is not a number to build a cage around. What does carry over is the line Merck puts immediately after the list: “These are small areas. Veterinarians should advocate that owners provide more space for their pets.” Merck adds that “rats prefer larger cages, and experimental studies suggest that rats should have a space large enough to be shared with up to four other rats.”
The practical version: two rats want at least about 80 by 50 cm of floor. Every source says more is better and none says smaller is fine, and buying the four-rat cage for two gives you room to add a third later, which is a decision most rat keepers make eventually.
Height is the number most cages get wrong
Rats are climbers, and this is the biggest difference between setting up a rat cage and setting up a guinea pig or hamster enclosure. Floor space is not the only currency. Vertical space is real space, and the evidence for that is unusually good.
Makowska and Weary filmed rats in semi natural enclosures and counted what they actually did. Their finding, in Royal Society Open Science, is that rats “stand at a height of about 22 cm by 2.5 months of age and 26 to 30 cm by the time they are fully grown”, and that standing upright is not occasional: rats did it “180 times per day in 3-month old rats”, “declining to 75 times per day at 13 months”. Climbing followed a similar pattern, about 75 times a day at three months, and burrowing stayed constant at “an average frequency of 30 times per day for a total of 20 to 30 min per day”. The paper’s own conclusion: “These findings suggest that standard laboratory cages interfere with important natural behaviours, and this is likely to compromise rat welfare.”
Set that against the regulatory minimums. A case study of rat cage height in the UK by Mazhary and Hawkins records that the UK Code of Practice “currently allows laboratory rats to be housed in cages that are 20 cm high” and that the EU Directive “requires a minimum cage height of 18 cm”. A fully grown rat rears to 26 to 30 cm. The arithmetic is the argument, and the authors reach the obvious conclusion: “there is sufficient evidence to justify increasing rat cage height to a minimum of 30 cm.”

Merck’s laboratory chapter arrives at the same place from the veterinary side, recommending “minimal cage heights of 30 to 38 cm (12 to 15 inches) for rats” precisely because the minimum “should take into account their typical postures, including standing fully erect on hindlegs and moving vertically”.
So 30 cm is the floor and not the goal, and it is a floor for a single storey. Two things follow that catch people out. Unlike a guinea pig pen, a rat cage’s upper levels genuinely count toward the usable space, because rats use them. And height is only usable if it is broken up: a tall empty cage with one floor is a fall risk and mostly wasted air. Every 30 cm or so wants a solid shelf, a hammock, a rope or a ledge, which is what the RSPCA is asking for when it says to “provide places to hide, climb and investigate at different heights within the cage.”
Bar spacing, and the cage that was built for another species
Bar spacing is the specification that most often makes an otherwise good cage unusable, and the hardest to source properly, because the welfare bodies state the principle instead of a number. The RSPCA’s rule is behavioural: “The bar spacing should be small enough to stop your rats from being able to poke their head through, once the head is through the whole body will follow!” The PDSA turns it into a shopping instruction, noting that large cages sold for ferrets and chinchillas are usually a good size, “just make sure they can’t squeeze between the bars.”
The number the rat fancy works to is half an inch. The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association answered a keeper who had bought a wide barred cage with this: “Rats should be housed in cages with 1/2 inch spacing between the bars, though a sturdy wire mesh is better than long bars.” On the three quarter inch cage she had bought, the answer was that “even an adult rat can still get its head stuck in 3/4 inch spacing, so they are really not safe.” Treat half an inch (about 1.25 cm) as the working maximum, tighter for young rats, and note that this is a fancy association’s guidance rather than a published welfare standard.
This is where the buy-a-ferret-cage advice goes wrong in practice. The size is right, the height is right, and the bars are frequently too wide. Measure the gap before you measure anything else, because a cage that fails on bar spacing fails completely and no amount of good setup inside it fixes that. The other escape route is the material: the RSPCA asks owners to “regularly check that their cage is still intact as rats can chew through some materials such as wood and plastic.”
Solid floors, solid levels, and bumblefoot
Every source consulted agrees on this one, which after the cage size section is a relief.
Merck’s pet owner guidance is direct: “The cage floor should be solid; wire mesh or grid flooring can damage rats’ feet and legs.” Its laboratory chapter gives the mechanism, that “rats and mice can trap their feet, and especially hindlimbs, in the openings, resulting in fractures and injuries.” The RSPCA and the PDSA say the same in plainer words, that flooring should be solid and not wire or bars.
The foot problem they are circling is ulcerative pododermatitis, which rat keepers call bumblefoot: a pressure sore on the sole of the foot that becomes infected. Thin wire concentrates a rat’s weight onto small strips of skin with nothing to cushion it, and heavier and older rats are the ones it happens to. It is a veterinary problem once it starts, so an animal with a red, swollen or scabbed sole goes to a veterinarian who sees small exotic pets rather than being treated at home. The cage design is the part you control, and it is genuinely preventive.
This applies to the shelves and ramps as much as the base, because a rat spends most of its waking time on the upper levels. A cage with a solid bottom tray and three wire mesh half levels is still a wire cage as far as the animal’s feet are concerned, so cover mesh shelves with something solid and washable or replace them. Merck allows one narrow exception for climbing surfaces: wire shelves “should be made of wire with openings no wider than 1/2 by 1/2 inch. Any wider opening might allow the rat’s back foot to get caught in the opening, leading to injuries such as a broken leg.” Its own preference is powder coated cages “with solid metal shelves and plastic cat pan bottoms”.
One enclosure type is ruled out entirely, and it is the one most often sold to first time small pet owners. Merck: “Aquariums are not suitable cages for rats and mice, because air circulation is inadequate and therefore ammonia builds up.” A glass tank has one open side, so the air above the bedding never moves, and the animal breathing it is prone to respiratory disease. Wooden cages are out for a related reason: urine soaks into wood, ammonia builds up, and rats chew through it anyway.
Bedding, litter trays, and the ammonia problem
Bedding is the part of a rat cage setup with the most conflicting advice, so it is worth taking the sources one at a time.
Merck’s pet guidance: “Recycled paper products marketed as bedding are safe and easy to clean. Hay may be added on top. Cedar, pine, and other wood shavings contain oils that can be irritating to rats’ sensitive respiratory tracts and are not recommended.” Its laboratory chapter gives the reason: “Wood chip bedding (such as pine and aspen) that has not been heat treated should not be used, because it contains volatile chemicals that can irritate the respiratory tract and activate liver enzymes in rodents.” The PDSA agrees and adds one more material, telling owners to use “a paper-based rat bedding or fleece cage liner which can be washed regularly” and to “never use cedar/pine woodchips or newspaper in your rat’s cage.”
Then it splits. The RSPCA asks for “a generous layer of suitable bedding material, such as wood chips (non-aspen), cellulose-based chips or shredded filter paper”, and says to avoid dusty materials such as sawdust “and any bedding which is made of aspen”. The RSPCA is the only body here that excludes aspen outright; Merck’s laboratory chapter accepts it only heat treated, and it is the shaving many US keepers reach for. The NFRS still lists “untreated wood shavings” as suitable, the opposite of Merck’s heat treatment rule, and the NSW standard accepts dust free sawdust and shavings.
Where four sources disagree, take the material all four accept. Paper based bedding is on every list and excluded from none, so that is the default: recycled paper crumble, paper pellets or plain shredded paper, laid deep. Depth matters more here than it might seem, because burrowing was one of the three behaviours Makowska and Weary found rats performing every single day.

Nesting material is a separate item from bedding, and one specific product is dangerous. The RSPCA is unusually direct: do not use “highly absorbent materials, or materials that separate into thin strands such as cotton wool or similar fluffy bedding products”, because “it can lead to a rat becoming tangled up in their bedding, and/or the loss of circulation in tangled limbs resulting in amputation or, unfortunately, euthanasia.” The safe versions are the boring ones: “white tissue paper”, hay, shredded paper and paper strips. The PDSA carries the same cotton wool warning, adding gut blockages if it is eaten.
A litter tray is worth adding on day one, because rats take to one readily. The RSPCA notes rats are “clean animals, preferring to keep toilet areas separate from sleeping, resting and feeding areas”, and the PDSA’s method is to put a tray where they already go, or trays in every corner if they are going everywhere, move their droppings into it where they can see you do it, and reward use. A used tray keeps the deep bedding clean between changes, which is the point.
All of this leads to ammonia, the health risk that ties the whole setup together. Merck lists ammonia buildup as a driver of respiratory disease, and on chronic respiratory disease says there is no cure, that “rats with chronic respiratory disease rarely live longer than 2 years”, and that “keeping your rat’s home clean, in particular by reducing ammonia levels in the cage, and early treatment of the infection are the best ways to fight this disease.” Ventilation, bedding depth, cage size and cleaning frequency are really one variable, and it is the air the rat breathes. Anything that looks like a respiratory sign, sneezing, sniffling, laboured breathing, or reddish brown staining around the eyes and nose, is a veterinary appointment rather than a husbandry adjustment.
Two rats minimum, and what that does to the cage
A rat cage setup is a setup for more than one rat. This is not a preference.
The RSPCA states that rats “can get depressed and develop abnormal behaviour if they live on their own, even when they have lots of contact with people”, and adds the line that answers the objection people usually raise: “Rats kept with other rats are just as friendly with people.” Merck names the syndrome, describing singly housed rats developing “isolated-rat stress syndrome, which includes signs such as increased startle reflex and elevated basal levels of stress hormones”. Woodgreen goes further than a pair, saying rats “are best kept in groups of three or more. This prevents one from being left alone if another one passes away, and it’s also necessary because of their complex social structure.”
On sex and combinations the guidance is consistent. The RSPCA: “They should be kept in pairs or small same-sex groups and are perfectly happy without the opposite sex. If you do keep your rats in mixed pairs or groups, make sure all males are neutered to prevent unwanted litters.” The PDSA and Woodgreen both say the same. The NFRS notes that litter mates make the best pairs and that “beyond ten weeks of age dominance hierarchy develops, especially between young bucks”, so introductions get harder with age, and the RSPCA suggests introducing cage mates “soon after weaning (at three weeks old) as they’ll fight less”. Merck’s shorthand is that “male rats tend to fight unless they grew up together” while “females can be in the same cage without any problems”. Neutering is a veterinary decision, not a housing one.
The reason this sits inside a cage setup guide is that group living changes what has to be in the cage. The RSPCA’s advice for reducing aggression is almost entirely about furnishing: provide resources “so that all rats can access them at the same time, such as food bowls, water dishes and hiding places”, provide “multiple shelters and visual barriers to help break up aggressive encounters”, and note that “having multiple levels in their home cage can also help act as barriers to aggression”. Shelters “must have multiple exits to avoid particular rats stopping other cage-mates from leaving”.
That gives a concrete furnishing rule. Count the rats, then put in more hides than that, ideally one spare, each with two doorways. Duplicate the food bowls and the water bottles, which also means one blocked sipper is not a crisis. Break the sight lines with levels and hammocks so a rat being chased has somewhere to be that is not a corner.
Where the cage goes, and the temperature
Rats do not regulate heat well, so the room matters as much as the cage. The RSPCA gives 19 to 23 C as the ideal and rules out conservatories, garages and sheds. The PDSA puts the ideal at 20 C. Merck’s clinical range is wider, that “mice and rats are optimally maintained at temperatures of 18 to 26 C (64 to 79 F)”, with relative humidity of 30 to 70 percent. The NSW standard prefers 18 to 22 C and asks that large fluctuations be avoided. A normal living room sits inside all four ranges, which is the useful conclusion.
Light and noise are the parts people forget. The RSPCA asks for a spot “not too bright during the day, out of direct sunlight, and dark at night”, because rats are nocturnal and “bright light can cause stress and harm their eyes, particularly albino strains (red-eyed white rats)”. It also asks that the cage be kept away from “high pitched sounds, ultrasound, long-term and unpredictable, sudden bursts of noise”, listing alarms, doorbells, vacuum cleaners, speakers and electrical equipment such as computer screens and televisions, and the PDSA makes the same point about vibration. Rats hear well above the human range, so a room that is quiet to you is not necessarily quiet to them.
Two more placement notes. The RSPCA asks that the cage stay in the same place, since moving it is stressful, and away from strong artificial smells such as air fresheners or smoke. And because rats are most active in the evening and at night, Merck suggests siting the cage where their activity will not wake the household.
What goes inside, and what never does
The RSPCA’s specification for the interior is the most complete one published: “include complex and enriched space, with a variety of horizontal and vertical barriers (walls and platforms), objects (tunnels, ropes, hammocks), materials (wood, cloth, paper tissues) and structures (ladders, shelters)”. It adds a limit that gets ignored, that “the enrichment shouldn’t take over the entire cage space”. A cage packed wall to wall with hammocks has no floor left.
Hammocks earn their reputation. Merck notes that “suspended cloth hammocks are popular with rats”, and that rats use enrichment devices more than mice do, though “they usually stop using the devices after 3 to 4 days”, so rotating and introducing new items keeps them interesting. Large cardboard tubes make good shelters, per the RSPCA, because rats can hide in them and chew them, and a chewed cardboard box is a box doing its job. Untreated wooden chew items matter for a species whose incisors never stop growing.
Wheels are allowed with specifications. Merck: an exercise wheel “should be at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter”, and “wheels should be smooth inside, rather than perforated, so as not to entrap rats’ tiny toes and feet”. A small wheel forces a curved spine and a barred surface catches feet and tails. Plenty of well set up rat cages have no wheel at all, and the climbing furniture does the same job better.
Water goes in a bottle rather than a bowl, since Merck notes rats push bedding into dishes and spill them. A second bottle is cheap insurance, because a blocked or airlocked sipper is invisible until an animal is already short of water.
The things that never go in are listed in the card at the top of this page. Two hazards sit outside the cage rather than in it, and matter because rats need daily time in the room: trailing cables and houseplants, and other pets. Merck’s note on the second is worth quoting because people underestimate it, that rats “should be kept away from other pets in the house such as dogs, cats, birds, and other rodents”, since rats are the natural predators or prey of several of them.
Coat and ear varieties change nothing about the cage, which is worth saying because the varieties are what people shop by. A rex with a curly coat, a dumbo with low set ears or a satin with a glossy one all need the same height, the same solid floors and the same company. The one variety with a possible housing implication is the manx, the tailless rat, since rats use the tail for balance and for shedding heat, so a tailless animal climbing a tall cage is worth watching more carefully.
A cleaning schedule that keeps the air clean
The sources cluster tightly here. Merck: cages “should be cleaned with hot water and a pet-safe disinfectant at least once a week, and the bedding should be changed at least twice weekly”. The RSPCA: “clean out the cage regularly once a week to prevent the build-up of droppings and urine”, plus spot cleaning through the week, and do it when the rats are awake rather than mid day when they are asleep. The PDSA, the NFRS and the NSW standard all land in the same place, between once and twice a week with a daily check.
Two details make a real difference. The RSPCA advises leaving “a handful of unsoiled clean nesting material behind to keep some familiar smells within the cage”, because a cage that smells entirely new is a stressor and, in a group, a trigger for renewed squabbling. And the standard the schedule has to meet is not the calendar: if the cage smells of ammonia at rat height it is overdue, and a bigger cage with fewer rats in it will always stay clean longer than a small one. Litter training pays for itself here, since the PDSA’s framing is that it “will keep mess to a minimum and makes daily cleaning quick and easy”.
Frequently asked questions
What size cage do two rats need?
At least 61 by 30 by 30 cm (2 by 1 by 1 ft) per the National Fancy Rat Society, and realistically the 80 by 50 by 80 cm cage Woodgreen specifies for up to four rats. Two rats in that 4,000 cm2 footprint get about 2,000 cm2 of floor each, which is generous against every published figure, and it still holds Woodgreen’s 1,000 cm2 each if you add a third and a fourth later. No source consulted recommends less.
How tall should a rat cage be?
At least 30 cm of clear height, and more once you are stacking levels. A fully grown rat rears to 26 to 30 cm, per Makowska and Weary, and Merck recommends minimum cage heights of 30 to 38 cm. Anything under about 25 cm stops a rat standing up in its own home.
What bar spacing is safe for rats?
Half an inch, about 1.25 cm, is the figure the rat fancy works to. The AFRMA’s position is that even an adult rat can get its head stuck in three quarter inch spacing, so rabbit cages and some ferret cages are unsafe regardless of size. The welfare test is that a rat cannot poke its head through.
Can rats live in a glass tank or aquarium?
No. Merck states that aquariums are not suitable for rats and mice because air circulation is inadequate and ammonia builds up, in a species prone to respiratory disease. Use a wire cage with a solid base.
Are wire floors and wire shelves bad for rats?
Yes. Merck says a solid floor is needed because wire mesh or grid flooring can damage rats’ feet and legs, and the RSPCA and PDSA agree. If a climbing shelf is wire, Merck’s limit is openings no wider than half an inch by half an inch, so a back foot cannot drop through.
What bedding is safe for rats?
Paper based bedding is accepted by every source consulted and excluded by none, so it is the safe default, laid deep enough to dig in. Cedar and raw pine shavings are ruled out by Merck and the PDSA, and cotton wool and fluffy strand nesting products by the RSPCA because of entanglement injuries.
Can I keep just one rat?
Not well. The RSPCA says rats can become depressed and develop abnormal behaviour living alone even with plenty of human contact, and Merck describes isolated-rat stress syndrome in singly housed rats. Two is the minimum, three or more is Woodgreen’s advice, same sex unless the males are neutered.
How often does a rat cage need cleaning?
Spot clean daily, full clean weekly, and change bedding at least twice weekly, which is where Merck, the RSPCA and the PDSA all land. Leave a handful of clean used nesting material behind. If it smells of ammonia at rat height, clean it sooner.
Do rats need a wheel?
No, and a bad one is worse than none. If you use one, Merck’s specification is at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter with a smooth rather than perforated running surface. Climbing furniture, ropes and daily time outside the cage cover the same need.
