Masked Lovebird

Agapornis personatus

The Masked Lovebird (Agapornis personatus) is an enchanting small parrot native to the woodlands and savannas of northeastern Tanzania. Characterized by its striking appearance, this species boasts a vivid color palette with a bright yellow body, contrasted by a prominent black "mask" covering its head. Its vibrant green wings and back, coupled with a brilliant cobalt-blue rump and tail, add to its kaleidoscopic beauty.

The Masked Lovebird is renowned for its lively and social nature, often seen in flocks that fill the air with cheerful chirps. True to its common name, this parrot forms strong monogamous pair bonds, displaying affectionate behaviors such as mutual preening. In the wild, they are cavity nesters, often making use of tree holes to raise their young. Adaptable yet reliant on specific ecological conditions, the Masked Lovebird thrives in the presence of water sources and plentiful food, feeding on a diet comprised mainly of seeds, fruits, and buds. Their playful and inquisitive nature makes them popular in aviculture, although they require ample space and social interaction to flourish as pets.
