Unknown Breed
An unknown-breed masked lovebird is a bird identified as Agapornis personatus but not tied to a named mutation, family line, or verified pedigree. Masked lovebirds are also called yellow-collared lovebirds, a name that suits the wild-type green bird with a dark head, bright yellow collar, red beak, and clean white eye ring. Captive birds may be blue, violet, lutino, albino, pied, white, or yellow, and mutation names can vary by breeder community. When records are missing, a visual description and photographs are usually more useful than a generic breed label.
For owners, the important questions are age, sex if known, past housing, diet, and whether the bird has lived alone or with a mate. Masked lovebirds are small but assertive, so they need safe handling, supervised time out of the cage, and perches and toys suited to heavy chewing. Breeders should avoid guessing at genetics from color alone; uncertain birds are best placed as companions unless their ancestry can be verified.
