Mixed Breed
Among lovebirds, mixed-breed masked lovebird is an informal description for a bird that looks partly or mostly like Agapornis personatus but has incomplete or uncertain ancestry. It may be a true masked lovebird of unrecorded lineage, a blend of masked and Fischer's or black-cheeked lovebird, or a bird carrying several captive color mutations. The species behind the label is a small African parrot with a white eye ring, short tail, powerful beak, and a lively, pair-oriented social style. Green with a dark mask is the classic look, while blue, lutino, violet, pied, albino, white, and yellow birds are common in aviculture.
Management depends less on the label than on the individual bird's behavior. Mixed or uncertain lovebirds need a cage that permits real movement, clean bathing water, and toys they can chew apart. Pairing should be watched closely because lovebirds may be territorial, especially around nest boxes. If breeding is planned, unclear background should be disclosed and kept out of pure masked-lovebird projects.
