Kinginrin
Kinginrin describes koi with sparkling reflective scales, often shortened to Ginrin in everyday pond and show conversation. It is a scale effect rather than a full color variety, so it can appear on Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, Chagoi, Ogon, and many other types. The shine may look like tiny diamonds, pearl flecks, or bright lines depending on the scale structure. Strong Kinginrin is easiest to see when the scales are aligned and the body has enough size to display the sparkle evenly.
Selection should balance shine with the underlying variety. A glittering Kohaku still needs a useful red-and-white pattern, while a Ginrin Chagoi should still have good body and calm pond manners. Young koi can look flashy in a bowl, but uneven scale rows or broken shine become more obvious as they grow. Keepers should maintain clean water and avoid rough handling because missing scales interrupt the effect. Breeders often track which pairings produce consistent sparkle rather than scattered reflective scales.
