Koromo

Koromo

Koromo, meaning robed, is a koi variety group that blends Kohaku-style red pattern with blue, gray, purple, or black reticulation over or near the red areas. It is commonly linked to Kohaku and Asagi influence. Ai Goromo, Sumi Goromo, and Budo Goromo are familiar forms, each with different depth and placement of the darker overlay. The best examples keep the clarity of a red-and-white pattern while adding a controlled netted or shaded finish.

Koromo can be difficult to judge young because the overlay may develop slowly or become heavy with age. Buyers should look for clean white skin, strong but not muddy hi, and reticulation that supports the pattern rather than burying it. Pond conditions and seasonal changes can affect how dark the robe appears. Breeders need patience and good records, since a line that produces attractive young fish may not always hold balance at maturity. Gentle growth and steady water quality help the variety show its detail.
