Hikarutsuri
Hikarutsuri, often written as Hikari Utsuri, refers to metallic koi based on Utsuri or Showa-type patterning. These fish combine black sumi with metallic shine and contrasting white, red, orange, or yellow areas, depending on the variety. Examples often include Kin Showa and Gin Shiro Utsuri. The appeal comes from strong wrapping pattern, dark contrast, and hikari that remains visible even over complex color.
Choosing Hikarutsuri requires looking at both pattern structure and metallic quality. A fish may have dramatic sumi but weak shine, or bright metallic skin with a pattern that becomes confusing as it grows. Keepers should watch for clean heads, balanced color placement, healthy fins, and stable body development. In the pond, excellent water clarity helps these koi show their reflective finish, while quarantine and careful handling are important because skin damage can interrupt the metallic look.
