Silkie
The Silkie guinea pig is the North American name often used for the long-haired breed called Sheltie in other cavy communities. Its coat grows back from the head and shoulders in a smooth curtain, leaving the face visible and avoiding the forward facial fall of the Peruvian. Silkies come in many colors and patterns, but the breed identity rests on the flowing rearward coat and balanced body underneath it.
A Silkie can be a gentle companion for someone prepared for coat care, yet it is not a low-maintenance choice if the hair is left long. Pet owners often trim the coat to keep bedding, hay, and moisture from collecting in it. Show breeders maintain wraps or careful grooming routines, while all keepers should watch for hidden skin irritation, weight loss, and dental issues that can be missed when attention stays only on the coat.
