Peruvian
The Peruvian guinea pig is a long-haired cavy breed whose coat grows forward over the head and falls in long panels along both sides of the body. In exhibition coat, the frontal fall can cover the face and the body hair may be trained and wrapped to protect length. Pet Peruvians are often trimmed shorter for hygiene and comfort. The breed appears in many guinea pig colors and patterns, including self shades, agouti, roan, dalmatian, tortoiseshell, and broken markings.
Peruvians need more grooming planning than short-coated cavies. Long hair collects bedding, hay, urine, and food, and mats can form quickly behind the ears, under the body, and around the hindquarters. Owners should decide early whether they are maintaining a show coat or a practical pet trim. Regular brushing, clean bedding, and careful checks during warm weather help prevent skin trouble. Breeders and exhibitors select for coat density, correct coat direction, body type, and steady handling because the breed has to tolerate regular coat work throughout its life.
