American
The American guinea pig is the smooth-coated, short-haired cavy most familiar to pet owners in North America and many other places. It has a close, even coat without rosettes, long hair, or satin-like special texture, and it can occur in a wide range of colors and patterns. The breed's straightforward coat and rounded body make it a common foundation for pet, show, classroom, and rescue guinea pigs.
American guinea pigs are popular because their grooming is simple, but they still need serious daily care. They require unlimited grass hay, vitamin C, fresh water, a roomy enclosure, and social companionship with compatible guinea pigs. Nails, teeth, weight, and skin should be checked regularly. Breeders and exhibitors focus on body type, coat smoothness, color quality, and temperament. For new owners, the American is often a manageable coat type, but not a low-commitment animal.
