Abyssinian Satin
The Abyssinian satin guinea pig has the short, rough coat, rosettes and raised ridges of an Abyssinian with an added satin sheen. Distinct rosettes and upright ridges give the coat a patterned surface that catches the light differently from a smooth satin. Abyssinian Satin is recognized in ARBA's Standard of Perfection for 2026 to 2030 as a breed separate from Abyssinian. British recognition differs: the British Cavy Council's current Rare Varieties listing treats Satin Abyssinian as an unrecognized coated satin combination, while its smooth Satin breed has a Full Standard.
Check the intended show's rules before planning an entry. For presentation, the rough coat should be clean, with clear rosette centers and ridges standing evenly rather than falling flat. The bone disease fibrous osteodystrophy has been reported in satin guinea pigs, although its cause remains unsettled.
