Lionhead Goose
The Lionhead goose is a Chinese domestic goose type associated with Guangdong and other southern Chinese breeding traditions. It is a heavy swan-goose-derived breed with a large body, dark bill, prominent head knob, dewlap, and throat folds that create the lionhead profile. The breed has been used for meat, guarding, and regional farm production, and it is much larger and heavier than the lighter Chinese goose familiar in many Western smallholdings.
Lionhead geese need space, water access, secure night housing, and feed suited to a large growing bird. The head and throat folds should be kept clean and should not interfere with eating, breathing, or movement. Breeders select for size, fertility, mothering or hatchability, and correct head type while avoiding weak legs in heavy birds. In regions where the breed is uncommon, buyers should ask about source stock and whether birds are true Lionhead geese or large Chinese-type crosses sold under a loose name.
