Aonghus Goose
The Aonghus goose is best handled as an obscure or flock-specific name for domestic geese, not as a breed with a widely published poultry standard. Although Aonghus is Gaelic in form, the label by itself does not identify a documented Irish heritage breed. Birds carrying it fall under the greylag-derived domestic goose, Anser anser domesticus, and may vary in size, body shape, and color, including grey, buff, pied, saddleback, blue, lavender, or splash markings.
When considering Aonghus geese, evaluate the actual flock: adult weight, fertility, temperament, gosling vigor, and whether parentage is being tracked. Their daily management is ordinary domestic goose management, with grazing space, secure night housing, clean water deep enough for head washing, and protection from dogs and foxes. Informal lines can be valuable on smallholdings when the breeder selects steadily for sound legs, calm handling, and birds that thrive in the local climate.
