Dzo/Dzomo

Bos grunniens × Bos taurus

The Dzo (male) and Dzomo (female) are hybrid animals resulting from the crossbreeding of a yak (Bos grunniens) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus). This fusion of species is predominantly found in the mountainous regions of Tibet, Mongolia, and parts of Central Asia. Possessing characteristics of both parent species, Dzos and Dzomos are renowned for their robustness and adaptability to high-altitude environments, inheriting the strong build and dense, insulating coats of their yak lineage, complemented by the greater milk and meat productivity of domestic cattle.

These hybrids are typically larger and more powerful than ordinary cattle, making them highly valued as draught animals for agricultural purposes in their native habitats. While Dzos are typically sterile, Dzomos are fertile and can be backcrossed with either yaks or cattle to produce further generations of hybrids. Beyond their economic importance, these animals play a vital cultural role in the communities that rely on them, often featured in local folklore and as a symbol of strength and adaptability.
