Challandais

The Challandais, or canard de Challans, is a French domestic duck associated with the marshes and farms around Challans in the Vendée. It is a traditional meat type rather than a lightweight egg breed, and its history is tied to regional table production and local market systems. Birds are often described with mallard-derived gray coloring, with drakes showing a green head and contrasting body pattern, though exact appearance can vary between farm strains and modern production lines.

Keeping Challandais ducks outside their home region usually means working with scarce stock or birds described by type rather than by a widely available international standard. They need management suited to meat ducks: clean bedding, room to exercise, bathing water, and feeding that develops frame without making breeders too fat. Flocks kept for regional preservation should not be casually crossed with common Rouen, Pekin, or mixed ducks unless the goal is table production rather than breed continuity. Buyers interested in authentic stock are wise to ask about origin, selection goals, and whether the birds come from a recognized French line.

How Much Does a Duck Cost? Ducklings, Adults, and the Real Budget

In small orders (the quantity most backyard keepers buy), common breed ducklings like Pekin and Khaki Campbell run roughly $10 to $15 apiece; the widely quoted $7 figure is a bulk price that only kicks in at large quantities. Rare or show breeds cost several times that, though the sellers price them one way each […]

What Do Ducks Eat? Feed, Foraging, and What to Never Give

Ducks eat a complete formulated waterfowl or all flock feed as the base of the diet, plus whatever they find foraging: green plants, insects, snails, slugs, and pond life. Around that base they will happily take greens and vegetable scraps, and they need clean water available whenever they eat. The base ration changes twice in […]

How Long Do Ducks Live? Domestic Duck Lifespan by Breed and Care

Most pet ducks live about 8 to 12 years. That is the figure the Association of Avian Veterinarians gives owners in its client brochure on caring for ducks, and it is the most specific number this guide could verify from a veterinary body rather than from a care blog. Almost everything else you will read […]
