Grade
Grade donkey is a livestock term for a donkey without verified purebred papers or with ancestry that does not meet a registry's requirements. It does not mean the animal is poor quality. Many grade donkeys are healthy, useful, and well conformed, but their background may be unknown, mixed, or simply unrecorded. They can be miniature, standard, large, spotted, gray, brown, black, or another common donkey color depending on their family history.
For owners, the practical question is whether the donkey's body, age, training, and temperament fit the intended use. A grade jennet may be an excellent companion or pack animal, while an intact jack still needs experienced handling and secure fencing. Pre-purchase checks should include feet, teeth, body condition, soundness, and whether the animal can be caught, led, loaded, and handled for farrier care. If grade donkeys are bred, keeping simple parentage and health records helps prevent repeat mistakes and gives future owners better information.
