Beige

Beige

Beige is a recognized color variety of the domestic chinchilla, Chinchilla lanigera, rather than a separate breed. Beige animals range from pale champagne to warmer tan, often with a white belly, pink ears, and ruby to reddish eyes that may look darker in some light. Breeders may describe light, medium, dark, or homo beige shades, and beige can also be combined with white, ebony, violet, or other mutations, which changes the final coat color.

The husbandry is the same as for other chinchillas. They need cool indoor housing and a hay-based diet; safe chewing material and dust baths support the teeth and coat. Heat is a serious risk for chinchillas, so color should never be the only buying consideration. Dense healthy fur, sound teeth, and an active but not frantic temperament matter more. Breeding beige responsibly means tracking what other color genes are present and selecting for body type and coat quality, not just a pale shade. Pet homes should expect gentle handling, since chinchillas can shed fur when grabbed or frightened.
