Standard Grey
In domestic chinchillas, standard grey is the wild-type color of Chinchilla lanigera and the reference point for most other chinchilla mutations. Each hair is banded, giving the coat a layered grey appearance with darker veiling over the back and a clean white belly. The shade may be described as light, medium, dark, or extra dark depending on the line and judging system. Because it is the base color, standard grey chinchillas are common in pet homes, show barns, and breeding programs.
Good standard greys are valued for more than color; breeders use them to strengthen size, conformation, coat density, and fertility in mutation lines. Pet care does not differ from fancy colors. A standard grey still needs a cool, low-humidity space; daily hay and safe chew items support teeth and digestion, and regular dust bathing keeps fur loose and clean. When choosing one, look for clear eyes, even fur, solid body condition, and a calm response to handling rather than assuming a common color means ordinary quality.
