Piebald
Piebald axolotls are Ambystoma mexicanum morphs with pale leucistic-type bodies and irregular darker patches, often heavier on the head, back, or sides than ordinary freckling. They usually have dark eyes and a pattern that looks more boldly marked than a clean leucistic or lightly dirty leucistic animal. The exact boundary between piebald, dirty leucistic, and heavily freckled forms can vary by breeder vocabulary, so parentage and clear photos are important.
Piebald coloration does not change the animal's basic needs. Owners should provide a cool, cycled aquarium, hides, gentle water movement, safe substrate choices, and appropriate foods. Dark patches should be stable pigment, not confused with skin damage, debris, or fungal growth. Breeders may select for stronger piebald expression, but they should also watch body proportion, gill quality, fertility, and survival in the line. Buyers should ask whether the label is based on visible pattern alone or on a breeding history that produces similar offspring.
