Volek Ranch

Volek Ranch raises registered Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle on the plains of central South Dakota, near Highmore, about an hour east of Pierre. The operation is a third-generation family ranch run by Keith and Janice Volek, with son Dustin and daughter Britney also actively involved.

The program traces its roots back more than two decades, when registered Gelbvieh cattle entered the herd as 4-H projects for the Volek children. Over time, those early animals became the foundation of a recognized seedstock operation. A key turning point came in 2003 when Dustin purchased a heifer that went on to earn championships and anchor the genetics the ranch continues to build on today.

Beyond Gelbvieh, the ranch also runs registered Angus, club calves, and commercial cows, as well as a set of commercial wool-type ewes and a diversified crop program. Bulls are developed with longevity in mind and receive a breeding soundness evaluation before leaving the ranch. The program emphasizes performance-driven cattle that work in the feed yard and in the pasture, with a focus on feed efficiency and carcass quality alongside functional structure. Volek Ranch has been a consistent presence at the Black Hills Stock Show, where its Gelbvieh cattle for sale have drawn buyers from across the region and beyond.
