Snow-Island Cattery
Snow-Island Cattery, run by Yukiko Shimada, has been breeding Russian blues in Sagamihara, Kanagawa — about 30 kilometers southwest of central Tokyo — since 1994, making it one of Japan's longest-running Russian blue programs.
Registered with the Cat Fanciers Association, Snow-Island holds the distinction of being the only cattery in Asia to have produced both a CFA National Winner and a CFA Breed Winner. Shimada is also a member of the CFA Russian Blue Breed Council and a regular member of the Russian Blue Fanciers club.
The program is intentionally small, with two to five litters per year. Shimada's stated goal is to produce Russian blue cats that meet the CFA breed standard while emphasizing sound health and gentle temperament. Kittens are placed only after a minimum of 14 weeks and the completion of two rounds of vaccination. Shimada places cats personally, meeting prospective owners directly rather than selling through pet stores or intermediaries — a practice that reflects the hands-on, relationship-centered approach she has maintained throughout more than three decades of breeding.
