Prairie Coteau Farm

Prairie Coteau Farm raises Clun Forest sheep in Astoria, South Dakota, on the Coteau des Prairies, a rolling upland plateau in the northeastern corner of the state, roughly an hour west of Brookings.

Nick and Kristianna Gehant Siddens founded the farm in 2004, originally as a community-supported agriculture operation, before narrowing their focus to certified organic garlic and, later, sheep. The flock was added in 2016 to provide on-farm fertility and make use of the farm's native grass pastures, and it has grown to around 75 head of Clun forest sheep.

The Siddens raise their Clun forest cross flock entirely on certified organic pastures in Deuel County, with genetics that also draw on Shetland and Blue Faced Leicester lines. Lambs are never fed grain, grazing a diverse mix of grasses and legumes through the growing season and eating hay in winter. The farm's native grass pastures, planted nearly a decade ago, do double duty: conserving highly erodible soil while also providing mulch for garlic production and grazing ground for the sheep. Those looking for Clun forest sheep in South Dakota will find a program where the flock is woven into the larger rhythms of a working organic farm rather than raised in isolation.
