North Fork Farms

North Fork Farms raises South Devon cattle in Mazeppa, Minnesota, a small community in the bluff country of southeastern Minnesota's Zumbro River valley, roughly 30 miles southeast of Rochester. Emily Buehler O'Leary and Andrew O'Leary run the farm together, carrying on a connection to the land that Emily traces back to the hobby farm she grew up on.

The farm's South Devon herd — known in heritage cattle circles as American Milking Devons — is listed at critical status on The Livestock Conservancy's Conservation Priority List, and North Fork Farms is among a small number of operations working to preserve the breed in the Upper Midwest. The cattle are raised entirely grain-free on pasture and hay through the winter, with the herd rotationally grazed across roughly 50 acres of oak savanna bluffland to support soil health and land regeneration.

Livestock at North Fork Farms graze through a silvopasture system, spending the grazing season among established oak stands on the steeper slopes of the property. Emily has received funding through USDA programs — including EQIP and a SARE grant — to expand tree planting on the land, with the goal of building a more climate-resilient pasture over time. Registered South Devon breeding stock are available from the farm alongside the beef operation, making it one of the few sources for South Devon cattle for sale in Minnesota.
