The herd left the farm in the mid-20th century, but the Bachs eventually tracked down surviving animals — including cows whose lineage traced back to the very Florida farm the original herd had been sold to — and brought Dutch belted cattle back to Tolland. The farm is situated in Tolland County, about 20 miles northeast of Hartford, and the on-site veterinary practice run by the family adds a layer of professional animal care to the day-to-day husbandry.

The Bachs focus on keeping their herd healthy and genetically diverse while preserving the integrity of the lakenvelder breed, which is recognized as critically rare by the Livestock Conservancy.
