Jim & Barb Beastrom

Jim and Barb Beastrom have been raising purebred Gelbvieh cattle at Beastrom Ranch, their diversified cattle and grain operation four miles northeast of Pierre, South Dakota, since 1973. The ranch sits in central South Dakota, a short drive from the state capital, and represents more than five decades of continuous commitment to the Gelbvieh breed.

The program is now a multigenerational family operation. Jim and Barb's daughter Brittney Spencer and her husband Wes manage the day-to-day work, while Jim remains active on the ranch and Barb serves as ranch bookkeeper. The family also produces Balancer cattle, a Gelbvieh and Angus cross, and were working with that cross before the breed association had formally named it.

Selection at Beastrom Ranch centers on convenience traits: disposition, fleshing ability, and strong maternal performance. The ranch runs an embryo transfer program to advance its most productive genetics, and genomic testing is used as one tool among several when making breeding decisions. The family participates in the Black Hills Stock Show and other regional events, and their herd bulls have found homes in both commercial and registered operations across the region.
