Hops-N-Hounds Irish Wolfhounds

Hops-N-Hounds Irish Wolfhounds raises AKC-registered Irish wolfhounds in Fredonia, New York, in Chautauqua County about an hour southwest of Buffalo. Owner Julie Schaeffer and her family operate the kennel on a 25-acre farm a couple of miles outside of town, giving the hounds plenty of room to move and live as part of an active household.

Before focusing on Irish wolfhounds, the Schaeffers spent more than a decade as 4-H leaders, breeding and raising livestock and teaching young people about responsible animal care, dog handling, obedience, and agility. That hands-on background in both livestock husbandry and dogs shapes how the kennel approaches health and early development today.

All dogs are health tested, vaccinated, microchipped, de-wormed, and screened for liver shunt before leaving for their new homes. The kennel is active in two local all-breed clubs and holds membership in the Irish Wolfhound Club of America, and the family participates in AKC, UKC, international, and Canadian all-breed shows as well as Irish wolfhound specialties throughout the year. Puppies stay with the family until 12 weeks of age, and the Schaeffers remain available to puppy owners for guidance well after placement. The kennel name itself has a lighthearted origin: the family also brews beer, making "Hops-N-Hounds" a fitting double nod to both pursuits.
