Flying H Genetics

Flying H Genetics has been raising Gelbvieh cattle out of Arapahoe, Nebraska since the Helms family entered seed stock production in 1948, making it one of the longer-running registered cattle operations in the Republican River region of south-central Nebraska, roughly two hours southwest of Lincoln.

Dick Helms returned to the operation in 1976 after graduating from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Animal Science, and the program has now carried into its sixth generation of family involvement. Gelbvieh genetics were added to the program in the early 1980s, growing out of a deliberate search for breeds that would complement crossbreeding goals and serve commercial cattle customers across a wide geography.

The operation has long placed emphasis on data-driven selection, incorporating artificial insemination, embryo transfer, EPDs, carcass ultrasound, and multi-trait DNA analysis into its evaluation process over the decades.
