Circle S Ranch

Circle S Ranch, run by John Shearer and family, raises purebred Gelbvieh cattle north of Canton, Kansas, in the heart of the Flint Hills region about 50 miles northeast of Wichita. The operation traces its registered Gelbvieh roots to the early 1990s, when John and Carla Shearer purchased their first registered female, and formally became Circle S Ranch in 1995 after relocating to their current location.

The ranch's breeding philosophy centers on structural soundness, functionality, and cattle that perform without heavy inputs. Those priorities have guided a program now in its third generation, with grandchildren already involved on the operation.

Circle S Ranch is also the founding breeder of Gelford cattle, a trademarked cross that pairs the maternal strengths of Gelbvieh with the complementary traits of Hereford, officially trademarked in 2015. The family has earned recognition at major shows including the Houston Livestock Show, the National Western Stock Show, and the North American International Livestock Exhibition, and has maintained an unbroken presence at the National Gelbvieh Show since 2001.
