Bow K Ranch

Bow K Ranch has been raising gelbvieh cattle in the Uncompahgre Valley near Olathe, Colorado since 1983, making it one of the longer-running gelbvieh programs in the state. Dave and Dawn Bowman, along with their son Andrew and his wife Sarah, operate the ranch as a multi-generational family enterprise roughly 90 minutes from Grand Junction.

The program currently runs about 85 head of purebred Gelbvieh, Balancers (Gelbvieh x Angus in both red and black), and purebred Black Angus. From the start, the selection emphasis has been on moderate-sized cows in the 1,100 to 1,300 pound range that perform well on maternal traits — calving ease, udder quality, adequate milk production, and docility. The breeding program relies on more than four decades of artificial insemination, and pairs spend the summer and fall months grazing at high elevations above Gunnison, Colorado.

Bulls are P.A.P., fertility, PI-BVD, and trich tested, and genomically enhanced EPDs are provided on all animals. The ranch holds membership in the American Gelbvieh Association and the American Angus Association. Buyers looking for gelbvieh cattle for sale in Colorado will find EPDs and pedigrees documented on all females, with both red and black, largely polled animals available. A structured vaccination protocol is in place for calves and breeding females alike, and the operation is Beef Quality Assurance certified.
