Barrel Valley Cockers

Barrel Valley Cockers has been raising cocker spaniels in Shelocta, Pennsylvania, in the Armstrong County area northeast of Pittsburgh, for more than thirty years. Joan Kunkle and Shannon McCracken run the program together, with operations spread between Shelocta and nearby Spring Church.

The kennel traces its roots to a single black cocker named Scooby, a gift from a friend that sparked a lasting focus on the breed. From that beginning, Barrel Valley developed into a small, home-based program with a stated goal of producing cocker spaniels that meet the AKC breed standard in conformation, health, and temperament. Breeding stock is selected from champion lines, and the program has produced dogs that compete in conformation, obedience, and agility.

Puppies are raised in the home and socialized in a family environment from an early age. The program follows American Spaniel Club health guidelines, which call for testing breeding dogs for inherited disorders including annual eye exams performed by a certified canine ophthalmologist. Barrel Valley is a listed member breeder of the American Spaniel Club and breeds across several color varieties, including black, buff, brown, brown and tan, and brown parti.
