Balmullo Farm

Balmullo Farm has been breeding Connemara ponies in Henrico, Virginia, since 1978, with a program rooted in producing ponies that compete at the highest levels of combined training, dressage, and the hunter ring. Owned by Donna Duckworth, the farm sits just east of Richmond, roughly ten miles from the city's airport.

The program's foundation traces back to the stallion Concord River's Roaringwater Bay, whose dam was the American Connemara Pony Society's Broodmare of the Year and whose sire was a society awardee as well. Approved by the ACPS at his first inspection by Irish and American judges, he went on to sire more than 50 foals out of Balmullo mares and won the Stallion class at the ACPS Region 4 show in Atlanta in 2001. The farm's current stallion, Foothills Field Marshall, is trained and ridden by Elliott Blackmon and has earned Grand Champion In Hand honors at the Region IV show in Florida, along with strong placings at USDF-recognized dressage competitions.

Temperament has always been central to the Balmullo breeding philosophy — the farm's guiding principle holds that a pony must perform as well as it looks. That standard has produced notable results: Balmullo's Miss Lucy was named the ACPS Connemara of the Year in 2005 after winning the all-breed Mountain and Moorland championship at the Devon Horse Show.
