Zebra Loach
Botia striata
The zebra loach, Botia striata, is a small striped loach from flowing freshwater habitats in western India. Its vertical dark bands, active bottom-feeding behavior, and social nature make it a popular aquarium fish for keepers who want movement near the substrate. Unlike some larger loaches, it stays relatively modest in size, but it still benefits from being kept in a group rather than as a lone specimen.
Aquarium care centers on clean, well-oxygenated water, stable temperatures, smooth hiding places, and a soft or rounded substrate that protects the barbels. Zebra loaches will take sinking prepared foods, frozen foods, and small invertebrate items, and they may help reduce pest snails without being a simple cleanup tool. Buyers should look for robust fish with intact barbels and avoid housing them with aggressive tankmates or very small animals that may be harassed at night.
