Zebra Loach

Botia striata

The Zebra Loach (Botia striata) is a small, freshwater fish belonging to the family Botiidae, commonly found in streams and rivers across the Western Ghats of India. Known for its striking and distinctive appearance, this loach displays a series of bold, vertical stripes alternating between dark and light colors, resembling the iconic pattern of a zebra, which provides a natural camouflage among aquatic vegetation and substrate. Typically reaching lengths of about 3 to 4 inches, the Zebra Loach exhibits a streamlined body and a slightly flattened underside, ideal for navigating swift currents.

In terms of behavior, the Zebra Loach is a social and peaceful species, thriving in groups and contributing to a harmonious aquarium environment. These loaches are active during the day and are known for their bottom-dwelling habits, where they scavenge for food, making them excellent for keeping tank substrates clean. Their diet consists primarily of small invertebrates, algae, and detritus, and they readily accept a variety of prepared foods.

An ideal setup for Zebra Loaches includes a well-oxygenated tank with a sandy substrate, plenty of hiding spots created by rocks and driftwood, and ample plant cover to mimic their natural habitat. Water conditions should be maintained with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and temperatures ranging from 73 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 26 degrees Celsius). With their vibrant patterns and engaging social behavior, Zebra Loaches are a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts looking to add both beauty and function to their aquatic setups.
