Crossbred

A crossbred severe macaw is a bird with severe macaw ancestry recorded outside a pure Ara severus line. The severe macaw, also called the chestnut-fronted macaw, is a medium-sized green macaw with a chestnut forehead, blue on the crown and wings, red under the wings, and a long tapered tail. In aviculture, crossbred may mean a known hybrid with another macaw species or a less clearly documented mix of captive lines; the exact parentage matters more than the label itself.

These birds need management closer to a macaw than to a small parrot, despite their smaller size. A strong cage or aviary, heavy chew material, daily exercise, and careful beak-aware handling are basic requirements. Crossbred severe macaws may vary in size, voice, and temperament depending on the other ancestry involved. Breeding facilities and rescues should disclose hybrid status clearly, both to protect pure species lines and to help future caretakers understand the bird's likely needs.
