Mixed Breed
The mixed-breed severe macaw label is used for a macaw identified mainly as Ara severus but not tied to a documented pure line. Severe macaws, or chestnut-fronted macaws, are native from Panama into northern South America and are among the smaller macaws kept in aviculture. Their normal plumage is mostly green, with a chestnut patch above the beak, blue flight feathers, and red underwing coverts. A mixed-breed entry may reflect hybrid ancestry, uncertain parentage, or incomplete records from previous homes.
For ownership and rescue work, the label helps set expectations without replacing a hands-on assessment. Severe macaws are active, social birds that can be loud and determined chewers, so they need sturdy housing, enrichment, and regular out-of-cage time. A mixed-background bird should not be marketed as a pure severe macaw for breeding. Prospective keepers should ask about age, diet, veterinary history, behavior around handling, and any available information on the parents.
